It took me quite a long time to find Caluua, I searched the internet looking for a local Breeder, but with no joy...  I then looked at the Crufts website and looked to see which Rhodesian Ridgeback was awarded the Best of Breed for 2005...  This was a bitch called Rex Ventors Farrah at Nyassa, who was also BOB in 2002, owned by Sue Campbell, the sole owner and founder of Nyassa Rhodesian Ridgebacks: www.nyassa.co.uk

I e-mailed Sue Campbell, and asked for some advice and Sue sent me an e-mail back with her phone number and we had a very long conversation, the first of many, about what I was looking for, and although she did not have any puppies available for me she did put me in touch with with some fellow breeders including Jean and Derek Smith from Lilongwe Rhodesian Ridgebacks, www.lilongwe.co.uk  Derek invited me to meet his lovely dogs and when I was there he also gave me a huge amount of help with my photography, hence the nice photo's on this site! I was added to a few waiting lists, however it was not looking promising as there were just no puppy bitches that had not already been spoken for.

Then, totally out of the blue in early April Sue called me to say that Farrah had had nine puppies, three dogs and six bitches, all sinus free and with perfect ridges...  I couldn't believe my luck, but there was still the chance that there might not be a puppy for me as i was number five on the picking list!  In May I went to Derbyshire to see the puppies and went totally crazy over bitch number five...

After spending the whole day with Sue and playing with the puppies, I picked up bitch number five and whispered, don't be nice to any other people...  When they come to look at the others, just be all shy and non interested and also don't grow too big, that way maybe I can take you home in a few weeks time!  I then had a nail biting, white knuckled two weeks, not knowing if bitch number five would be coming home with me.  I then got the call I had been waiting for...  Bitch number five was mine!!  Apparently she was quite small compared to her brothers and sisters when the other pickers looked at the litter as she had not had her next growth spurt and she did not play with them very much either!!

When I arrived on the 19th May, with my auntie and uncle (Nancy & Rex) to take my puppy home, bitch number 5 came running over and jumped up at my legs and I knew she was the puppy for me! I was un-expectedly emotional when Sue gave me a toy to take home for her, but it was such a great day!  Nancy then drove my car home while I sat in the back of the car with Caluua, and proceeded to clear up puppy sick all the way home!!!  Her travel sickness is getting better now, you'll be pleased to know!

Caluua got her name in a funny way...  I originally wanted to call my puppy Talulah, so I could have Liska & Lulah which I thought sounded great!!  However, I did want my puppy's pedigree name to be the same as her pet name, which would have been fine, except all the puppies from this litter were registered with names starting with "C".

So after looking at a list of names at Sue's house I chose "Caluula",  so I could still have Liska & Lula...Only one minor problem...  This name had already been chosen for one of the other puppies, so Sue registered her as Caluua as it was similar!!

I have not shortened Caluua's name at all, since she arrived, as it's just so unusual and funnily enough  Kalua is also the name of a coffee Liquor which is nearly the same color as Caluua's fur.  So now I have 2 dogs with alcoholic names...

Caluua has just been a pleasure from the start, she has only eaten one skirt and torn the foam out of her bed, but that's it...  So Far!!!  Actually, thinking about it, she has eaten a few of my friends clothes, shoes and some of her son's toys when she stayed at her house when I was on holiday, but we'll just try to forget about that shall we?!!

At puppy training classes she has been a real show stopper, everyone just loves her as she is so pretty and just full of energy!  In recall she runs to me so fast that she can't stop, she then just runs straight past me and gets distracted and disrupts the other dogs by barking and larking about!!  I love it really!

Watch this space to see how she does at her first show, "The Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of Great Britain" on Sunday the 24 September 2006.  I'll add some more photos too...
